What caught my eye walking into Ashton-Under-Lyne was the architectural legacy of an industrial past. Robust brick architecture with exuberant and self-confident detailing.

Friday 26th February 2016 – Ashton-Under-Lyne / Dukinfield

Blown away by some of the architecture here – only regret that I didn’t make it to those buildings I could see in the distance – views down streets and across Canals. Cavendish Mills and the Old Swimming Baths, just two of the landmarks I will have to wait to see up close.

Make my way across town towards Dukinfield, where I am staying at Barton Villa. Crossing the Ashton Canal and then the River Tame. The two waterways are very intertwined at this point and sit metres apart.

This is the day for our big walk ! Stewart Ramsden is walking with me – he knows the area so well and has done this walk may times – often leading groups in his capacity as Chair of the Tameside Ramblers ! This is one of Stewart’s ‘Ramtrails’!

Our walk will take in Wild Bank and Hollingworthall Moor from Godley.

The weather is overcast and grey, very cold, with a possibility of rain / sleet. I really don’t care. I am so looking forward to this. Everything is new to me – even my hiking boots and weatherproof jacket. We set off from Stewart’s home at around 09.30am.

Whiteleaf Centre, Aylesbury Phase 2 Commission begins –

We had our first Art Commission Phase 2 design meeting at the Whiteleaf Centre today to meet staff working in the four Wards, Opal, Sapphire, Ruby and Amber. Tom Cox of Artscape and myself presented some first draft ideas to staff. We spread out the drawings and some paper models on the meeting room table and asked staff to comment on the work and annotate the drafts for us. This proved a rewarding process – with some of the iconography in the draft designs getting positive approval, whilst others – a definite thumbs down! –

The composite image below shows the Ward Round Rooms, which are found within each Ward Hub. This room is used for Clinical staff meetings and meetings with family and service users. We are proposing to install digitally printed wall coverings to two walls in each room.

Official Opening of the Jubilee Building, Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton

Simon Stevens, Chief Executive of NHS England was supposed to be doing the honours today at the Official Opening of the Jubilee Building, but for unforeseen reasons he couldn’t come !

His place was taken by the local MP Jeremy Browne, who was able to stand in at very short notice. I am sure that everyone was disappointed not to have the head honcho in attendance. Everyone has worked incredibly hard on the project, from the Trusts’s Capital Projects team, BDP Architects and BAM to medical and ancillary staff. However, it was a lovely day all round and the weather was perfect for showing off the building.

This was the first time that I had seen both my projects – ‘70 years on…” & ‘Murmuration’ fully installed. I couldn’t have asked for a better day to see them. The Art for Life team, led by Lisa Harty have done an amazing job in co-ordinating and presenting the work. I am very grateful to them.

Jubilee Building – Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton

I have been invited to the official opening of the Jubilee Building at Musgrove Park Hospital on Friday 23rd January 2015 –

The building was delivered by Taunton and Somerset NHS Foundation Trust’s Capital Project Team in partnership with BAM and BDP Architects

This invitation marks the official opening of the Jubilee Building at Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton

I was commissioned on several projects in relation to the new building as well as being involved with the Trust as Lead Artist for almost 10 years, throughout their 10 year programme of regeneration and new build.

‘Murmuration’ and ’70 years on…’ are two of the projects now completed & installed in the building. These have both featured in detail in earlier posts here. Please scroll down to review –

The tensile screen artwork was manufactured and installed by Architen and digitally printed by VGL Vinyl Graphics Ltd
