Littlemore Mental Health Centre – Detailed Design

Thursday 4th May 2017 –

Draft Artwork: Littlemore Mental Health Centre. Artist: Christopher Tipping

Draft artwork awaiting approval to go into production – we are working with our client team to review / comment and approve in the next few days so we can meet our install schedule.

At this stage I set all the imagery against a black background – which actually indicates glazing with no printing – just clear glass.

This work will be digitally printed onto optically clear vinyl. The process allows for a layer of colour, followed by a layer of white and finally another layer of colour. The artwork can be read equally from both viewing sides – inside or outside the building. The production level artwork files, sampling and final digital printing and installation is done by my long-time collaborators, Vinyl Graphics Ltd.

Various degrees of opacity and transparency are designed into the artwork. As a rule this is worked out via single colour files – in this case magenta – which clearly indicate degrees of opacity.

Designs for production…

Monday 16th January 2017

We decided to keep the development and manufacture of the detailed site-specific artwork for the unit under wraps to allow for further consultation, production development and sampling etc. Since the last post 8 months ago now, things have really moved on!

Following design approvals and sign-off at the end of April 2016, we embarked on the detailed design work for production with VGL and other specialist contractors and suppliers.

We are collaborating with VGL on a broad range of digital designs, including a large scale polychrome bespoke Wallcovering to the Main Corridor and print-white Glazing Vinyls to the external glazing frames. VGL are further assisting us in the supply of digital production files for:

Laminated Glazed Screens being manufactured by The Printed Film Co

Retractable Privacy Screens for the Chemotherapy Treatment Room, being manufactured and supplied by Kwickscreen.

The following images show some of this process, including building works, sampling and sample site-installations, testing the ideas. Many thanks to Architects IBI Group  and Main Contractors John Turner

Michael Hughes of IBI Group – our Project Architect, has however designed a brilliant new canopy entrance feature – not sure I can show that one just yet ! – but will get an image asap !

A large vocabulary of individual landscape inspired elements were developed for the project, using documentary photographs taken on my walk with Stewart & further drawings and studies made in the studio.

As per usual in my practice, some of this iconography is part of a common language of ideas which appear throughout my work – some are original to this project, some may find their way into the next project. Some have migrated from a previous project. This is my original ‘handwriting’, and may offer clues to the driving elements which fuel my approach to any work.

Jack Harrison VC

The new development at Orchard Park, due for completion in 2017 is to be called ‘Harrison Park’ , 100 years after Jack Harrison VC, a former Hull FC Rugby League Star was killed at Oppy Wood,  Arras, France in 1917 during the First World War.

A Pinterest Board of research images about Orchard Park and its history, can be found here. This will be added to throughout the project.

Hull was awarded  City of Culture 2017 so there is much to celebrate in the lead up to this brilliant event for the city.

‘Harrison Park’, Hall Road, Hull – new project commission !

I have just been commissioned on a new ‘Extra Care’ Housing development on Hall Road, Orchard Park in Hull.

This project is being delivered by Riverside Care and Support in partnership with Wates Living Space. The project architects are Croft Goode. The landscape architects are re-form landscape architects.

This is one of three developments in the City which Riverside are delivering concurrently. The other sites are Leads Road on the north Bransholme Estate and Hawthorne Avenue in West Hull. There is a substantial integrated arts strategy and programme, developed and being delivered by RKL Consultants.   I am one of a number of artists who have been commissioned to respond to these sites. The other artists are: Jyll Bradley, Katayoun Dowlatshahi, Rona Smith, Tim Norris and Angus Ross.

Riverside (one of the leading social housing providers in the UK), in partnership with Wates Living Space, is developing three new high quality extra care schemes within the city of Hull;

Harrison Park, Hall Road (65 apartments, 60 x 2bed, 5 x 1 bed)

Cecil Gardens, Hawthorn Avenue (95 apartments, 89 x 2 bed, 6 short stay)

Redwood Glades, Leads Road (156 apartments 60 x 2 bed, 96 x 1 bed))

The developments will be delivered under the PFI protocol. They will be high quality residential developments providing lifetime homes for adults who need some form of extra care and support. Riverside is committed to engaging the skills and imagination of artists in providing people with living environments which enhance their quality of life, stimulate their imagination and which contribute meaningfully to life of the community”. Whiteleaf Centre, Aylesbury Phase 2 Commission begins –

Monday 6th July 2015, Aylesbury

We had our first Art Commission Phase 2 design meeting at the Whiteleaf Centre  today to meet staff working in the four Wards, Opal, Sapphire, Ruby and Amber. Tom Cox of Artscape and myself presented some first draft ideas to staff. We spread out the drawings and some paper models on the meeting room table and asked staff to comment on the work and annotate the drafts for us. This proved a rewarding process – with some of the iconography in the draft designs getting positive approval, whilst others – a definite thumbs down! –

The composite image below shows the Ward Round Rooms, which are found within each Ward Hub. This room is used for Clinical staff meetings and meetings with family and service users. We are proposing to install digitally printed wall coverings to two walls in each room.

Central Chelmsford

A quick site visit yesterday – 19th March – to see the manifestation sample installed in the M1 / M2 Block entrance lobby. This is one of the interpretive artworks on site – part of the public realm and public art enhancements.

Sean Ogley, Senior Technical Manager for Denne Construction who has advised and managed my input throughout the scheme –  in tandem with Frances Lord, Public Art Consultant – took me around the site to review recent developments and to see the manifestation sample in situ.

These are few images from the visit –

This is the interior courtyard space, which we know as The Place – this is a public space for both residents and pedestrians alike. The site will provides a new pedestrian route along a desire line from Chelmsford Station, through to the town centre.

The whole scheme has been designed by Pollard Thomas Edwards Architects with Area Landscape Architects. The project is being delivered by Denne Construction.

Interior of entrance lobby – with sample vinyl manifestation taped to the glazing. The weather was really dull & overcast. The printed white inks don’t jump out very much. If it had been bright and sunny, the design would cast a myriad of shadows onto the frame and floors. Will have to wait & see how that works out !

The manifestation is being manufactured and installed by Vinyl Graphics Ltd.

Central Chelmsford – Glazing Manifestation

I spent yesterday – 17th March 2015 – in Reading, working in the design room at VGL Ltd with one of their production designers, James, to build and sample the final production artwork for the glazing manifestation to be installed in the M1 / M2 Block Entrance Lobby, Central Chelmsford. VGL really do put in the extra mile to get exactly what I want – it is very much appreciated.

We had a full size sample printed and tomorrow I am going to site to see it installed for final approval by the project team.

This is the visual that was produced – it is presented against a black background because the artwork is printed in many layers of opaque and transparent white overlaid one on another.  – Durst Print white only in reverse onto Madico Optically Clear vinyl, applied to the inside face of glazing.
